What are the consequences of a contaminated build platform?

The build platform is one of the central components of every 3D printer and plays a decisive role in the quality and accuracy of the print results. A clean and well-maintained build platform minimises the risk of errors or damage to the printer's components and thus ensures a smooth printing process.

Why is the build platform so important?

The build platform is the area on which the object is built during the printing process. It lowers into the material tray after each layer and allows the liquid resin to form the next layer. At this stage, the light from the projector begins to define the mould by curing the resin layer by layer, but what happens if the build platform is not in optimal condition? Cured resin residues from previous print jobs in particular can cause significant problems. These residues affect the zero point of the build platform, i.e. the point at which the build platform meets the surface of the material tray, and can therefore disrupt the entire printing process.

Why are resin residues problematic?

After each completed print, the printed object must be removed from the build platform. Blades or spatulas are usually used to remove the finished component. The problem: Minor resin residues often remain, and it is precisely these that can have serious consequences for the next print job. This is because if these residues are overlooked, the build platform is positioned incorrectly. It can no longer move exactly to the zero point, which means that the first layer of the new print job does not start correctly. In the worst case scenario, the print job does not start at all or the sensitive Teflon-coated film of the material tray is damaged. Such damage can lead to expensive repairs and production downtime.

How do I clean the build platform properly?

Proper maintenance of the build platform is essential to avoid these problems. The platform should be thoroughly checked and cleaned after each printing process, taking care to remove even very small, hardened plastic particles that are difficult to recognise at first glance. The following steps have proven to be effective:

1. thorough inspection after each print: check the build platform carefully for residues. Even the smallest particles can affect the next print.

2. use suitable tools: use special spatulas or blades to carefully remove the printed objects without scratching or damaging the build platform.

3. regular cleaning: Make sure to clean the build platform completely after each print job. A soft cloth or silicone spatula can help to effectively remove any remaining material.

The consequences of an unmaintained build platform

An unclean build platform can not only affect the current print job, but also significantly reduce the service life of the material tray. If the build platform cannot lower correctly to the zero point, it may exert too much pressure on the film of the material tray. This can lead to scratches, cracks or premature wear of the film. The print image is also negatively affected by irregular layers or even misprints. Conclusion: A clean build platform makes a significant contribution to process reliability and ensures that every print job runs smoothly.

It reduces the risk of printing errors and extends the service life of the material tray and the entire printing system. It is therefore advisable to carefully clean the build platform after each print and check for any residues, as this is the only way to avoid unnecessary misprints and maintain print quality at the highest level.
